Last month there was a big twitter beef between Kanye West and Jimmy Kimmel, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Yesterday Yeezy made his appearance to clear up the issue. The meet-up turned in to an interesting and entertaining talk.
Before I go on, let me briefly explain the situation. It all started a month ago when Kanye said some remarkable things in an interview with the BBC radio. He made statements such as: “Rap is the new rock ‘n’ roll. We are the new rock stars, and I’m the biggest of all of them. I’m the No. 1 rock star on the planet.” Shortly after the footage was put online a spoof version was shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live where two kids reenacted the interview using Kanye’s quotes. The rapper was not satisfied and he immediately went on a twitter rant. At first in a friendly manner but a few tweets later things got uglier.
Jimmy Kimmel responded to the rapper’s tweets on national tv. He even mocked Kim Kardashian, Kanye’s wife-to-be, by saying that he had seen the video (the sextape with Ray-j which was all over the net a few years ago).
Tuesday Jimmy Kimmel made a big announcement on Twitter saying Kanye would make an appearance on Wednesday. The two made up and what followed was a very interesting conversation which, once again, proved that Kanye West is not an asshole (for those who didn’t know yet). Jimmy Kimmel made it clear that he had not seen the whole interview and that things got pulled out of context because he only saw a few minutes of Kanye’s 60-minute talk with Zane Lowe. Kanye from his side said that he was shocked by the spoof and that he had not expected it coming from the TV host because they know eachother personally.
After the apologizing they had a nice talk about Kanye’s carreer and his personal life. Once more Kanye showed us his human side, saying that he just wants to live his dreams just like everybody else. Here are the most interesting quotes:
On how the media thinks about him:
“I feel like media does everything they can to break creatives, break artists, to break people’s spirits, and I do everything I can to break media.”
On paparazzi:
“People feel like it’s OK to treat celebrities like zoo animals and or act like what they are saying isn’t that serious and their life isn’t that serious or their dreams aren’t serious.”
“The way paparazzi talk to me and my family is disrespectful, you know what I’m saying? We bring something of joy to the world. When people hear my music, they have a good time. And I should be respected as such when I walk down the street. Don’t ask me a question about something you saw in the tabloids, don’t try to antagonize me. ‘Cause you know what? It’s not safe for you in this zoo. Never think that I’m not from Chicago for one second. . . . And I understand paparazzi, I understand you’ve got to get your money, it’s hard out here, blah blah blah, but let’s have respect for each other. You do help me get money, paparazzi, you know what I’m saying? You show people how fresh my outfit is, and that helps me influence people.”
On his personal life and putting himself out there:
“If you guys look at the Zane interview, it’s really something extremely fearless for someone in my position to do because most people just bowdown for tv or bowdown to these camera’s. I could care less about about any of these camera’s in all honesty. All I care about is my family, I care about protecting my girl, protecting my baby and protecting my ideas and my dreams. That’s the reason why I went so crazy.”
On being a creative genius:
“I’m a creative genius and it’s no other way to word it, I know you’re not supposed to say that about yourself and I say things the wrong way a lot of times but my intention is always positive. And I want to bring more things to the world, I want to help the world, I want to make people’s lives easier.””
“I’m totally weird, and I’m totally honest, and I’m totally inappropriate sometimes. And the thing is, for me to say I wasn’t a genius, I would just be lying to you and to myself.”
“Taste, culture, art, just the quality of life, this is what I’m here to do. So when I compare myself to Steve Jobs, or Walt Disney, Howard Hughes, David Stern, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Jesus or whatever, I’m saying these are my heroes. These are people that I look up to. This is the type of impact I want to make on the earth.”
The conversation was so interesting that Jimmy Kimmel lost all track of time. The perfomance of the popular rock band Artic Monkeys could not take place.
In my opinion Kanye West is a great artist and indeed a creative genius. Sometimes he has crazy ideas and he does act stupid once in a while but at the end of the day we’re still dealing with an artist that has won 21 Grammy Awards. But he’s not superman as some may think. For instance, I think it’s pretty safe to say that he’s better at making music than at being a fashion designer, although his plain white 120 $ t-shirts did really well. That’s the perfect proof that there are still a lot of people who are crazier than Yeezy.
